Māori & Pasifika Success

Our school community recognises and celebrates the unique strengths and identities of our Māori and Pasifika students. We set high expectations for their success and believe that empowering students to take control of their learning journey is key to achieving those goals. Our teachers understand each student as an individual, acknowledging their cultural backgrounds and the significance it holds for them. At Peninsula Primary School, we go beyond traditional education by providing meaningful learning opportunities that promote cultural exchanges, allowing our students to learn from one another.

At our school, fostering engagement with Māori and Pasifika families is a priority. We regularly host hui and fono (meetings) where families can gather, build connections, and provide valuable feedback to enhance our support for their children's education.

Here at PPS we have an incredible Pasifika group, led by Mrs. Fa'amamafa. This dynamic team blends the vibrant songs and dances from various Pasifika nations, showcasing the rich cultural diversity within our school.

We also take great pride in our Kapa Haka group, guided by Whaea Lakaya. They are not just performers – they're all about building connections, staying active, and diving into the world of waiata, mōteatea, and te reo Māori. It's not just about the show; it's a fantastic way to be part of something special at Peninsula Primary.

Every two years, Peninsula Primary buzzes with excitement for our Matariki hāngī. The whole school community comes together, and the day before, children dive into peeling veggies and preparing around 500 parcels. On the big day, early risers show up in their PJs, gathering around the blazing fire with hot chocolate in hand. The feast that follows is mouthwatering – from chicken and cabbage to potato, kumara, carrots, and the highlight: Lakaya's famous stuffing. It's a morning of warmth, community, and celebration and one of PPS’ favourite Matariki traditions!
