It was a bright, sunny summer day, ideal for cricket, when our school’s cricket team excelled at the Zonal Cricket Day, held at the Neil Avenue sports fields.

In our first game, against Flanshaw, the team was still adjusting to the big occasion of playing on a cricket pitch with a hard plastic ball. We were narrowly beaten in our only loss of the day. We then beat Freyberg A convincingly, and followed this by defeating Matipo A.

The team had adjusted well to the playing conditions and there were some great fielding, bowling and batting efforts by all members of the team. Another great team effort saw us beat Rutherford A in fourth game. The team was now aware that we were just one game away from winning the A Section of the tournament.

In our final game we had to beat Tirimoana A to get to the top of the section. This was a hard fought game and the last ball of the game determined the fate of our team.  In the nail-biting last ball we lost a wicket, and the game ended in a tie.  Since the points were shared for a tie we were edged out from the top of the A Section points table.

Overall the team played very well and each member made valuable contributions to the success of the team. Michael Reddy and Joshua Larking captained the team well. Thanks must also go to Kathy Hohepa and Chris Larking, for their support and encouragement of the team throughout the day. Kathy also helped with transporting the team. Well done to the following team members : Michael Reddy, Joshua Larking, Susi Motufoua, William Lafaitele, Tamati Hohepa, Miha Kovacevic, Tusca Tanenui, Tevita Toloi, Jhashil Goundar and Krishna Mistry.
