Keeping Our Students Safe Policy
Introduction:
All people who belong to Peninsula Primary School have the right to be free from bullying and violence. Bullying is different from outbreaks of aggressive behaviour in that it is deliberate and persistent. Bullying can take many forms, for example regular ‘teasing’.
Purposes:
- To prevent bullying or unprovoked aggressive behaviour which can cause psychological damage which may have lasting effects on a child.
- To provide a safe physical and emotional environment for students.
Procedures:
- Teachers will always be on the lookout for bullying.
- Students must be encouraged to report concerns to teachers, parents and anyone who can help.
- Peninsula Primary School’s Education Plan will include programmes designed to strengthen students against bullying eg ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ N.Z. Police and against students becoming bullies.
- In the event of an incident on bullying being reported, the following steps will be taken, as appropriate:
- All individuals involved will be spoken to as part of investigating what has happened
- Parents will be contacted if the incident is serious or if the same offenders are again involved.
- The issue may be discussed in classes.
- Consequences will be assigned to those who deserve them e.g. removal from the playground, looking after a person they bullied, litter pick-up.
- In serious cases the school will consider stand-downs, suspensions, expulsion or exclusion, following the Ministry of Education guidelines.
