Enviro News Updates
Our Enviroschool Programme
News Update 1
Welcome to a new school year.
Our last year was busy with several e-projects (environmental projects) being started to make the school more environmentally sustainable and beautiful.
Some of these projects will continue this year, such as litterless lunches, composting and our gardens.
There will be other e-projects started throughout the year, we will keep you posted with what the e-projects are and any help we need. For our first e-project we need to collect 1 litre milk bottles for worm tea and egg cartons for planting seeds into.
We also need help again with our garden to table programme, with both gardening and cooking. Mrs Barton is also looking for any extra produce especially lemons that people have spare for cooking with.
Mr Whittaker is looking for any spare forks or spades that people have for gardening.
In other news Mr Whittaker worked his magic and got funding for us to install waterless urinals in 6 of the toilet blocks at school, this will save over 400,000 cubic metres of water each year.
What a way to make our school more sustainable!
News Update 2
Did you know a group of students from our school were part of the Get growing with New Zealand gardener television show on Prime TV? The show with our students aired on 6th February, the students were knowledgeable and had some great things to say. Well done, we are proud of you all!
There will also be an article about the schools Garden to Table programme in an upcoming NZ Gardener magazine, so keep an eye out!
We now have an Enviro Update noticeboard in our library with information on what we are doing in our school and what environmentally friendly activities there are in our community.
Come in and check it out!
Upcoming Events:
Ecoday is being held on Sunday 6th March from 10am – 4pm at Olympic Park in New Lynn, there will be lots of environmentally friendly fun for the whole family, including a recycled arts and crafts market, a kidzone, food and drink, and an ecoexpo and green marketplace.
News Update 3
On Saturday the 19th of March Peninsula Primary had a stall at the Family Fun day.
We made Zucchini and Feta Fritters with some of the Nature Crusaders.
The Nature Crusaders did a wonderful job. They behaved like the role models that they are and promoted our school well to all passers-by. They also made wonderful fritters.
So a special thank you to the Nature Crusaders and the teachers that helped out. If you tried our fritters and want the recipe, we have put it up on our website.
Come and check out our stall at the Gala this Thursday. We will be selling seeds and worm tea fertiliser.
Also Mrs Barton will be selling soup made by the talented year 5 and 6 cooks from our Garden to Table programme.
Peninsula Primary School is in an article in the Your Home and Garden Magazine, April 2011 issue.
There will be a copy in the library and at the office if you want to check it out.
