Dolphins
By Evana-Lee Lorigan
Room 14
Age 6
Hello, I am going to talk to you about something that lives in the sea, but it’s not a fish.People love them. You can see them in New Zealand and I have seen heaps. I think that I am an expert. That is why I am talking to you about dolphins. Dolphins are mammals that live in water. They have warm blood and swim up to the oceans surface to breathe. There are about 37 different kinds of dolphins, like the Bottlenose Dolphin, Spotted Dolphin, Spinner Dolphin, Common Dolphin and Stripped Dolphin.Did you know that an Orca is a dolphin?Sometimes Orcas are called Killer Whales because they are such good hunters. The Orca is the largest member of the dolphin family. Dolphins breathe from a blowhole on the top of their head. When dolphins go under water they need to close the blowhole. When they came up they open it to breathe. A baby dolphin is called a calf.Mother dolphins sometimes have twins. The mother pushes the calf up to the top of the water to get its first breath. Dolphins can talk to each other. They whistle and squeak and chirp and pop. They make noises that sound like clicks or claps. Dolphins eat fish and squid. They can’t chew their food. They catch it with their teeth and swallow it whole. Most people love dolphins, but they face many dangers from us, like water pollution from rubbish, chemicals and oil spills in the sea. If you want to see a dolphin you can go to Australia to Sea World or you could go up north. I went to see dolphins up north.
I really hope you enjoyed listening to my speech.
Monkeys
By Caitlin Magasiva
Room 14
Age 6
Hello, my name is Caitlin. I am going to talk to you about an animal that swings in trees and eats bananas.Do you know what I am talking about? Have you guessed yet?Yes, I am going to talk to you about monkeys. A monkey is a small mammal. It belongs to the same animal family as apes, like chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas. Monkeys come in all sorts of sizes, shapes and colours. They have furry bodies and long arms and legs. Most monkeys have tails. Wild monkeys live in Asia, Africa, North America and South America. They like to live in trees. There are more than 100 kinds of monkeys. The smallest monkey is the pygmy marmoset. Its body could fit in your hand. The fierce mandrill is one of the largest monkeys. It lives in forests in Africa. Like most mammals baby monkeys are born live. A baby monkey can cling to its mothers body. As soon as it is born it drinks its mothers milk until it grows teeth and can start to eat food. Monkeys live in groups called troops. They are friendly animals and like being with each other. Most monkeys keep safe by being quick and running away from danger. Monkeys that live in trees keep a look out for eagles who can swoop down and carry them off. Unfortunatly, If you would like to see wild monkeys they do not live in New Zealand. You will have to go to the zoo to see them. I hope that I can go to the wild one day to see monkeys.Thank you for listening to my speech, I hope you enjoyed it.
