At Peninsula Primary School we began the ‘Garden To Table’ program in February 2010.
At present the year 5 and 6 children have 2 sessions per term. They have for 45 minutes in the schools Enviro vegetable garden and 45 minutes in the kitchen.
In the Enviro garden the children do a variety of tasks like turning compost, mulching, fertilizing, planting, sowing seeds, digging compost into soil and learning about basic garden science.
In the kitchen the children do cooking with the produce that has been grown in the garden. They learn cooking techniques like chopping, mixing, peeling, stirring, simmering and basic food science. The aim of the ‘Garden To Table’ program is to provide children with an opportunity to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh seasonal produce.
It is hoped that that as the program develops all children at school will be able to take part.
